Foundling Museum, which is located at Brunswick Square, was originally one of the first houses in London for abandoned children and housed over 27,000 children before its closure. In 1998 the Foundling Museum was set up as an independent charitable organisation and in 2004 it opened to public as a state-of-the-art museum.
Since then this London attraction has transformed itself into one a specialist London museum with a large collection of artworks and social history relating to the children taken in and the terrible social problems that led to children being abandoned by their parents.
The Foundling Hospital Collection comprised works of art by William Hogarth or Joshua Reinolds.
One of its founders and artists, William Hogarth encouraged artists of his day to donate artworks to the house so he could generate money from fees paid by members of the public viewing the works. In effect he created the first gallery in the city at the Foundling House.
The Foundling Museum in London is currently housed in buildings adjacent to its original site in Brunswick Square near Russell Square Underground station. Because of its subject it is one of the most child-friendly London museums - in fact the building looks onto one of the biggest children’s parks in London.
It’s worth noting that there are often art workshops and learning events for children at the Foundling Museum, though it is advisable to ring ahead to check the availability of these events. Don’t miss out on this and other London's attraction.
